What oils are best for Labor and Delivery?
Here's a list of just a few of the oils that I've found to be really helpful in labor and delivery:
Clary Sage– Helps to support contractions if labor gets stalled. It can be applied to your inner ankles and lower abdomen to increase dilation.
Ylang Ylang– Helps with advancing labor, promotes healthy blood pressure.
Jasmine– Helps with speeding up labor. Apply to the bottoms of feet and belly.
Surrender– Helps with easing the need to be in control. Surrender is a blend of Lavender, Lemon, Black spruce, Roman chamomile, Angelica, Mountain savory, and Matricaria oils.
Lavender– Helps keep a calm atmosphere and mindset as well as being stimulating to the circulatory system, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory. Avoid using it too early in labor though as it can slow things down if they aren’t well established. Helpful for dulling and easing uterine pain and for relieving back and leg pains.
Valor– Helps with focus and helps you feel more “grounded”, for courage and is mood elevating. To boost morale and to help with body alignment, especially the hips. A helpful oil to use during transition and to reduce anxiety. Valor is a blend of Black spruce, Camphor, Blue tansy, Frankincense and Geranium oils.
Frankincense– Helps maintain calmness and uplifted emotions. Fantastic for anointing baby with after birth, diluted in a carrier oil. Also good for perennial massage in pregnancy to help prevent tearing.
PanAway– Helps with pain management during labor. Can be rubbed on the belly or hips in a carrier oil. PanAway is a blend of Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove, and Peppermint oils.
Peppermint– Helps with nausea and headaches. Great to place a drop or two in ice water for cooling during pushing.
Peace and Calming - Helps the woman in labor (and birth attendants!) to stay peaceful and calm during labor and delivery. Promotes calmness and helps to stop panic and fear. Peace and Calming is a blend of Tangerine, Orange, Ylang ylang, Patchouli, and Blue tansy oils.
Geranium– Helps with tone and tighten the uterus and helps slow bleeding. It's great to use on a mother's stomach after delivery.Good for calming and de-stressing,for exhaustion and edema.
Thieves and Purification– Helps with combating germs, these oils both have antibacterial and anti-fungal qualities. Diffuse either when you first get into the hospital room to clean the air, and again once moved to the Mother/Baby Unit. Also when visitors are coming to avoid exposing baby's new immune system to an influx of germs. Thieves is a blend of Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary oils. Purification is a blend of Citronella, Rosemary, Lemongrass, Tea tree, Lavandin, and Myrtle oils.
Gentle Baby– Helps with bonding, calming, comforting, emotional heart, soothing skin, relaxation. Gentle Baby helps release negative emotions of fear, shock, anger and grief. It also can help with mental exhaustion. It was designed for moms, moms to be and newborns. It's a blend and there are 10 essential oils that make up Gentle Baby: Rosewood, Lavender, Lemon, Roman Chamomile, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Rose Otto, Jasmine, Palmarosa, and Coriander.
